The activity I could return to endlessly
When I examined what I love, Kung Fu and movement with awareness stood above almost everything else. They offer challenge and variety, a sense of significance, continuous learning and the possibility of helping others. The body becomes a place where growth can be felt immediately.
“The practices we love often reveal the needs our purpose is trying to unite.”
The missing need
I also noticed what was incomplete: community. Training alone can develop skill, but sharing the teaching creates connection and contribution. That recognition helped explain why teaching, outdoor classes and the dream of a dojo mattered so much. The method wanted other people inside it.
A practice becomes purpose
Kung Fu meets many needs without pretending to solve every problem. It gives me a language for courage, humility and structure. When combined with kindness and service, the art becomes more than self-improvement. It becomes a way to help another person discover capacity in their own body.
Look beneath the behaviour
Many behaviours are attempts to meet basic human needs: stability, variety, significance, connection, growth or contribution. The same action can meet several needs, and a destructive habit may persist because it serves them efficiently in the short term. Understanding the function gives change a better target.
Try this: choose one repeated behaviour and score how strongly it provides each of those six experiences. Then design a healthier behaviour that meets at least three of the same needs. Make it easy enough to test this week instead of demanding an instant lifelong replacement.
Choose an activity that makes time disappear. Ask which needs it meets and how sharing it could turn enjoyment into contribution.
